1. Prada's story
In 1913, the Prada brothers opened a shop in the famous Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II street in Milan. At first they specialized in classic leather goods such as gloves, bags and suitcases. Fratelli Prada was appointed royal purveyor to the court by Victor Emmanuel III in 1919, which can still be found today in the expanded Prada logo, which depicts the coat of arms of the House of Savoy.
After Mario Prada’s death in 1958, his daughter Luisa took over the management of the company.
In 1978, the granddaughter of Miuccia Prada (*1949), together with her siblings Alberto and Marina, inherited the company from her mother Luisa, who retired from the company, and thus founded the successful expansion into a fashion company.
It was not until 1983 that a second Prada store was opened, in Via della Spiga in Milan. Miuccia Prada earned her reputation through her creative use of various fabrics and the simple, modern lines of her 1985 collection of shiny black parachute nylon handbags. These new types of bags quickly became extremely popular everywhere, giving rise to a global counterfeit industry of Prada products.
When Miuccia Prada took over the management of the company, the old-fashioned, formerly staid leather goods company was transformed into one of the world's largest fashion companies in a very short time. In 1978, Miuccia Prada met the Italian businessman and then owner of a leather goods company in Arezzo, Patrizio Bertelli, at a fashion fair in Milan, recruited him as a supplier for Prada and married him in 1987.
Bertelli, a manager notorious for his temper, contributed significantly to the company's success and is CEO of the Prada Group. Miuccia Prada is chief designer and chairwoman of the board of directors.
Since April 2020, Belgian designer Raf Simons has been co-creative director with Miuccia Prada. The company also owns the brands Miu Miu , Church’s , The Original Car Shoe and a café in Milan.
